The multimedia card evolved to produce the SecureDigital card. In part because of their almost identical design, devices that use SD cards are upwards compatible and can also use multimedia cards.

The term secure refers to two things: the technology based on the cryptography method used to protect copyrighted audio DVDs and the physical write-only switch attached externally.
